Technology Fragmentation and How We Can Finally Fix It

Lessons Learned from Veeva's Hosted ACRP Focus Group

During an invite-only focus group at the 2026 ACRP conference, Veeva gathered ten veteran site leaders to examine current operational friction. Representing Academic Medical Centers, hospitals, and private practice networks, and averaging over a decade of clinical research experience, this cohort shared stark realities regarding their daily technology experience.

A Familiar Reality

Manual workarounds remain universal 100% of respondents rely on 4 or more manual workarounds (such as shadow spreadsheets and paper binders) daily, with nearly half utilizing 7 or more.

System integration is still an anomaly 66% explicitly reported that their site’s internal software systems are not integrated, pointing to constrained funding (42%) and competing organizational priorities (33%) as primary roadblocks, and only 20% are confident in their organization’s ability to maintain and validate active integrations.

Participant care is compromised 66% of respondents rate the impact of technology fragmentation as extreme.
